The CEDAW has opened its 87th session in Geneva and runs until 16 February. Made up of independent experts, the Committee is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. Adopted by the United Nations in 1979 and ratified, to date, by 189 States parties, the Convention is an essential legal instrument for protecting and promoting the fundamental rights and dignity of women and girls.
